Baiyappanahalli-Bangarpet trains to help Whitefield IT staff

BENGALURU: A Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) service will run between Bangarpet and Baiyappanahalli from Monday. This would redress the demand for such a service during the evening peak hour and put an end to open ticket holders unauthorisedly travelling in reserved compartments of Kochuveli Express at Krishnarajapuram station, said railway sources.

“The Railway Board gave us the go-ahead a couple of days ago to run these trains recommended by us,” Sanjiv Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru Railway Division told Express. “With the Metro’s East-West corridor fully connected now, people residing in the areas en route these two points, particularly the IT crowd at Whitefield, can benefit from this train which would suit their office hours,” he said.

The MEMU with eight coaches can accommodate up to 1,600 passengers. It will leave Bangarpet at 3.55pm and reach Baiyappanahlli at 5.10pm. In the return route, it will leave Baiyappanahalli at 5.15 pm and reach Bangarpet at 6.35 pm.  It will run on all days except Sundays.

The train  has stops at Krishnarajapuram, Hoodi, Whitefield, Devanakunte, Malur, Byatarayanahlli, Tykal and Maralahalli. The end-to-end ticket costs Rs.20. Agarwal said, “Running a MEMU instead of a diesel train will reduce pollution, accommodate more passengers and pick up will be faster.”

KSR to Channapatna link

Monday will also mark the debut of a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) between Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna railway station and Channapatna. “This new train could help ease the rush on Bengaluru-Mysuru rush,” Agarwal said. This DEMU will leave KSR at 9.55am and reach Channapatna at 11.05am. In the return direction, it will leave Channapatna at 4.15pm and reach KSR station at 5.40pm.

“These are part of the division’s efforts to exploit the rakes to the maximum. Instead of having a long halt time, we are using them for more trips,” he added.
