BBMP council meeting. The bone of contention was the property tax hike. The result: The meeting ended abruptly without taking any major decision.
The unruly behaviour of the corporators prompted an upset mayor to say: “In the history of the BBMP council meetings, so much shame has not been brought as today.” The opposition was demanding a rollback on the property tax hike.
When the meeting began mayor BN Manjunatha Reddy and BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad were forced to revoke suspensions of the BJP leaders who were suspended by the mayor last time for their reckless behaviour. What followed was a war of words between the opposition party and the Congress leaders.
“Why are you not collecting property tax from builders? Builders from all seven zones owe the BBMP over Rs 500 crore which has never been collected. Why?” asked opposition leader Padmanabha Reddy which has got everybody on their feet.
The reply by the ruling party members that they are investigating the matter and will collect tax from all builders in a few days was not enough to pacify the warring members.
Pointing to the BJP leaders, Manjunath Reddy said: “You are embarrassing the council by creating a ruckus. Bengalureans have welcomed the online system and it is one the best systems ever created in BBMP. Don’t waste our time on this issue. We can’t do anything against the government decison.”
This provoked Padmanabha Reddy and his team who rushed to the floor. They sat and raised slogans like ‘We want justice’ and ‘Bring Congress down’.
However, the mayor refused to consider the rollback. He requested the members to go back to their seats but they did not which left him with no option but to call off the meeting.
