Bengaluru: Party-goers have a reason to cheer. They can now dine out, guzzle or shake a leg till 1am on all days of the week. After several years of restrictions, imposed on police recommendation, Bengalureans can enjoy an extended nightlife.
In a notification on Thursday, the excise commissioner extended the business hours of clubs, star hotels, eateries and bars from 10am to 1am.The revision is effective Friday. The notification doesn’t specify a time period, saying the deadline has been implemented until further orders. This means the notification doesn’t need to be updated every year.
Until now, pubs and eateries have had to down shutters by 11.30pm on all days barring Friday and Saturday (1am). Police commissioner NS Megharik said the department favours the move; they communicated the decision to the government well in advance. We recently extended the deadline for eateries to 1am throughout the week. We don’t think pubs and bars staying open till 1am would be a problem,” police commissioner NS Megharik said.
The move has thrilled Bengalureans, who have taken to social media platforms like Twitter to share the excitement. “Return of nightlife in Namma Bengaluru
,” tweeted Bineesh Manikandan, an HR professional. “En route to Bengaluru
! Looking forward to the am deadline #Bangalore,” read another tweet.
Though pub owners are happy, they want to see how the city reacts to the development. Some say staying open late in the night will cost them more.”Even when the deadline was extended to 1am for weekends, it took time for crowds to trickle in. We will adopt a wait-and-watch policy to see how Bengaluru
reacts to the change. If patrons want to stick around, we will remain open. If not, we’ll wind up at the usual time,” said Siddarth Poojari, founder and CEO of City Bar, Glass House
and Indian Kitchen.
