The BBMP has made it mandatory to organise a special drive to collect property tax on every Wednesday for all the eight zones in the city. The civic body is expected to reach the Rs 2,600-crore property tax target by the end of the current financial year.
Speaking to media, M Shivaraj, chairman, standing committee on tax and finance, BMBP, said that the special drive was launched three weeks ago and it has received a positive response from the property owners. “The BBMP revenue officials have succeeded in collecting Rs 50-crore property tax during the last three weeks. If we continue this special drive on every Wednesday, till the end of this current financial year, the BBMP will certainly reach the target of collecting Rs 2,600 crore property tax,’’ Shivaraj said.
Appreciating the property owners, business establishments and software companies for coming forward to clear the arrears for the last few years, Shivaraj said that the BBMP would intensify efforts to identify the property tax defaulters and penalize them. “We are also focusing on lakhs of property owners in the newly added wards who are yet to come under the tax net,’’ he said.
