The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike undertook on a closure drive on Saturday, shutting down shops in South and West parts of Bengaluru including Jayanagar, Subhash Nagar and Yeshwanthpur. The owners had been defaulting on their rental payments. Some of these enterprises had not paid rent for several years, said officials.
“We were due for almost Rs. 6 crore from several of these shops, and some of them have not been paying rent since 2007. These shops have tenants that are both government agencies as well as private individuals and corporations,” said V. Leelavathi, Assistant Revenue Officer (South). In the Jayanagar shopping complex, where 11 shops were shut, close to Rs. 4.51 crore was due to the BBMP, said officials. In the western parts of the city, the BBMP sealed the doors of shops rented out to several defaulters.
