PATNA: Hitting out at the Union government for neglecting Bihar in the first list of smart cities, urban development and housing department (UDHD) minister Maheshwar Hazari on Thursday said the state government would develop a new town, ‘New Pataliputra’, on the lines of Centre’s ‘smart cities’.
Addressing ‘Build Bihar Smart City Summit, 2016’, organized by BUIDCO, Hazari said the government was in the process of earmarking land for the purpose. Hazari, however, hoped that with CM Nitish Kumar calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu to discuss the issue, Bihar would find place in the second list of smart cities.
UDHD principal secretary Amrit Lal Meena said Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation was trying its best to push inclusion of the city in the second list. Meena said 55.17% was the cut off of the first list and the cities who could not make it to the list were asked to improve their proposal. “Bhagalpur had scored 47.19%,” he said.
Bhagalpur mayor Deepak Bhuwania and municipal commissioner Avneesh Kumar Singh said the revised proposal would focus on promotion of silk industry, construction of flyovers and an airport at Bhagalpur. “We expect our city to be there in the next list,” Bhuwania said.
