CALANGUTE: A special gram sabha of the Calangute panchayat on Sunday morning gave the thumbs up to the preparation of the land use map by the North Goa Planning and Development Authority (NGPDA).
A resolution was adopted to seek more time from the NGPDA which had given villagers 30 days starting July 12 to provide information about their properties and structures so as to prepare the land use map, besides other suggestions and objections. A resolution to maintain the FAR at the existing level was also adopted at the packed gram sabha which saw an uproar.
The gram sabha began with Calangute panchayat ‘leader’ Joseph Sequeira questioning the methodology used by the NGPDA to determine the future planning of Calangute. “Half of Calangute comes under CRZ; I don’t think CRZ can come under the NGPDA because it comes under the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA),” he said.
NGPDA member secretary R Pandita explained the process of compiling the land use map, and urged villagers to give details of their structures so that they could all be regularized. This would also enable better planning for the village, he said.
He also allayed apprehensions among villagers about large tracts of comunidade land being used for public utility projects, pointing out that these are just projects envisioned for the future needs of the village. A large number of villagers attended the meeting at the Calangute panchayat ghar in the presence of a strong posse of policemen.
