NOIDA: A day after the Supreme Court of India demanded an explanation from Delhi, UP and Haryana governments about action taken against builders on dust pollution at builder sites, a drive around the construction sites of Noida reveals thick hanging dust and smog at the main hubs of the city even in the middle of the day.
Construction material is seen lying open at the sites. Mud dug up from construction is lined up along the main roads of the builder sites in Noida as well as Greater Noida West. Dust flying thick and high at the sites, make breathing difficult and passers-by mostly have car glasses rolled up.
The situation continues thus, even after the District Magistrate of Noida, NP Singh served notices to the builders. Meetings were also held between the Magistrate and the builders. In an earlier interaction, the DM had said that if pollution control regulations are not followed on site, stricter regulations would be implemented.
“Steps are being taken all around to enforce the pollution control norms at builder sites. From the courts as well as the administration, the effort is to control the pollution levels at construction sites. When it comes to Noida builder sites, if there are specific complaints, we welcome them and action shall be taken,” Atulesh Yadav, Regional Officer, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board said.”
“The reality is that with the thick dust hanging all over Noida and Greater Noida, though there are lots of meetings and notices, nothing is really being done at the ground level. There is still a heavy level of air pollution in the areas where development is taking place. Both PM10 and PM2.5 levels should be checked soon to get a correct estimate of the pollution levels in these areas, soon,” Vikrant Tongad, of Social Action for Forests and Environment, said.
