GREATER NOIDA: IKEA Group, the leading Swedish home furnishings company, is scouting for land in Greater Noida to set up its first showroom in north India. Representatives of the company met Deepak Agarwal, CEO, Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), on Friday and expressed interest in setting up the facility on nearly 25 acres of land in Greater Noida.
Speaking to TOI, Agarwal said that an informal proposal came during a meeting between officials of the department of industrial policy and promotion and Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) in Delhi. “We had a meeting with several Swedish investors including IKEA, Volvo, Ericsson and a dozen other companies,” Agarwal said. “The meeting was attended by Alkesh Kumar Sharma, CEO and managing director, DMIC and DIPP additional secretary Sanjiv Gupta, besides others,” he added.
“The representatives of IKEA told us that they were keen to set up a showroom facility in the National Capital Region (NCR). They need nearly 13 to 25 acres of land, which we have in Greater Noida,” he said. “We have offered them land along the Noida-Greater Noida expressway for a showroom, manufacturing unit and warehousing under the DMIC project. They have to get back to us with a formal proposal within a week,” he added.
Agarwal further said that during the meeting, Ericsson, another Swedish company majoring in information and communications technology, discussed a proposal offering solutions with LED lighting for Greater Noida. “The model they have proposed includes LED street-lighting, traffic lighting and CCTV cameras for surveillance,” the CEO said. “This connected LED street-lighting model demonstrates the capabilities of light beyond illumination. The focus is on offering lighting as a service that scales with a city’s needs and enable us to offer citizens a more connected, energy-efficient and a safer urban environment, while preserving existing budgets and resources to improve the livability of their city. The company has already implemented a similar model in Bhopal and Kolkata. A detailed presentation will be made by the company on November 21. We will then take a final decision on the proposed project,” he added.
