NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed that construction sites flouting air quality norms and causing dust pollution will be imposed with “environmental compensation” as per their plot size.
“We, hereby, direct that construction sites that are built on a plot area of more than 20,000 square metres will be liable to pay environmental compensation of Rs 5 lakh per violation,” a bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar said.
The tribunal also clarified that construction sites built on a plot area of 100 sq m will pay Rs 10,000 while buildings of 100 to 200 sq m will pay Rs 20,000.
The tribunal had earlier directed civic bodies and public authorities in Delhi-NCR to submit a list of builders carrying out construction in areas over 2,000 square feet.
NGT directed DDA, NDMC, municipal corporations and the Delhi cantonment board to ensure that there is no burning of waste in the open and a compensation of Rs 5,000 be imposed as directed by it earlier.
