MUMBAI: The state government has decided that MMRDA’s rental housing project will be replaced by affordable housing scheme in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR). No more projects under Rental Housing Scheme (RHS) will be cleared from now on.

The state’s urban development department in a notification issued on February 9 states, “The rental housing scheme in the area of MMR plan and only Rental Housing Projects in respect of which Location Clearance has been granted by MMRDA on or before publication of this notification shall be allowed.”

The government had appointed MMRDA as the project implementation agency for the rental housing scheme. The private sector was offered FSI incentive in return for providing self-contained tenements of 160/320 sq ft carpet area to MMRDA free of cost which was allotted to eligible low income group households. Since year 2008, the RHS has been implemented in urbanizable areas in MMR.

The rental housing scheme was introduced in 2009 to allow participation of private sector developers with an aim to check the growth of slums in MMR.
