The decision will benefit 6,000 families that reside in these chawls and buildings on 17 mill lands across the city. These served as quarters when the mills were operational. The families were allowed to stay on though the mills have closed down. These families will get these homes free of cost as they have living in these quarters.
Girni Kamgar Sangharsh Samiti founder Datta Iswalkar said the families will now get larger homes. “Earlier it was decided to give them 300 sq feet tenements. Now they will get an additional 100 sq feet on account of the fungible fsi,” he said. Mill workers have been offered affordable housing on mill lands. The Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) has so far provided 6,923 tenements, 225 sq feet at a cost of Rs 7.5 lakh. Another 2,634 tenements are under construction, said Iswalkar.
The state urban development department issued the notification last week seeking objections/suggestions to modify Development Control Regulations to allow the fungible fsi without charging premium.
