LUCKNOW: In order to decentralize commercial activities in Lucknow – which have been concentrated around Hazratganj and, to some extent, Gomtinagar – the town and country planning department of UP has suggested making five more commercial zones. These hubs will be developed near three national highways; Faizabad Road, Sultanpur and Rae Bareli Road.
The department has proposed developing five such city centres modelled on Hazratganj around the core city. Right now, the city has only one commercial zone, Hazratganj, which comprises schools, markets, institutions, financial institutions, and offices. So all movement during peak hours is directed towards already busy routes like Ashok Marg, MG Marg and Lohiya Path. This blocks city’s traffic daily. A senior official said, “In order to decongest main roads in the city, we felt it was important to develop five more commercial centres in new, developing areas. These zones will have facilities like markets, offices, schools, residential projects, banks and malls so that people living there don’t have to drive far. “For the first time, Master Plan 2031 has made provision for a Knowledge Park on the stretch from Mohan Road to Jail Road. This area would be developed as an educational hub comprising engineering and medical colleges, management institutes and coaching centres. “Mushrooming of such colleges and institutes on Faizabad Road and Rae Bareli Road inspired the department to earmark a dedicated area for this sector,” said the official.
In the new plan, a 100-km Outer Ring Road will surround city’s periphery and include all the new townships, housing projects, CG City, Awadh Shilp Gram and cricket stadium developing on the outskirts. The feasibility report of Outer Ring Road has already been submitted by the NHAI to Centre for approval.
To check the movement of heavy vehicles like trucks and buses on the outskirts, town and country planning department has also recommended terminals at regular intervals for their halt. This would not disrupt city’s main traffic flow as earlier they parked on roadsides causing inconvenience to smaller vehicles. Apart from the three hi-tech townships developing on the periphery, the Master Plan proposes construction of five more integrated townships.
With new developments, there is bound to be a spurt in the crime rate. To keep a check, a new police line is in the offing near the jail. It would have a separate set-up for policemen to keep vigilance on city’s boundary.
What new Master Plan 2031 will have for Lucknow’s periphery?

*Knowledge Park to house educational institutions
