Madras HC ordered Puducherry govt not to register unapproved plots

CHENNAI: The Madras high court has ordered notice to the Puducherry government on a PIL filed by an advocate seeking a directive to the authorities against registering unapproved plots in the union territory.

The court had on September 9 directed the registration department not to register or entertain sale deeds of unapproved layouts and buildings. The petitioner said agricultural land was being converted into residential layouts causing a drastic reduction in wetland area. Illegal plots were being developed in the UT in gross violation of the Pondicherry Town and Country Planning Act, it said.

Counsel for the UT sought two weeks time and said the government was contemplating a law similar to the Tamil Nadu Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016. The matter will be heard on January 3.
