Madras HC summons CMDA & registration officials over conversion of farmlands

CHENNAI: The Madras high court has summoned senior officials of Chennai metropolitan development authority (CMDA) and state registration department in connection with a PIL against registration of unauthorised residential plots created after converting farmlands.

The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan, passing orders on the PIL of advocate Elephant G Rajendran, said: “In order to pass necessary orders, we would require a senior officer from the CMDA and the registering authority, who are familiar with the issue.”

The PIL said fertile agricultural lands were being converted into housing plots and that there was no restriction on registration of such properties. Initially, small portions of such unauthorized lands get registered, and thereafter the entire area is treated as housing plot, and sanction for urban use obtained, he said.

He sought to restrain the authorities concerned from giving approval to convert agricultural lands into residential layouts, with a consequential relief of forbearing inspector-general of registration department from registering unapproved plots and buildings.
