Maharashtra govt upgrades few cities, state staff to get higher HRA

AURANGABAD: State government employees working in Pune, Nanded, Nashik, Malegaon and Sangli from Maharashtra have reason to cheer ahead of New Year as they are entitled to receive 10% increase in House Rent Allowance (HRA). These cities have been upgraded by the state finance department on the basis of the latest Census in 2011.

Class I employees will get a net raise in monthly salary upto Rs 4,000, while other category employees will draw more pay in the range of Rs 800 to Rs 3,000. Nearly one lakh government employees are going to benefit from the decision. Pune city, including municipal limits of Pimpri-Chinchwad and three cantonment areas, has been collectively elevated to the X category, whereas Aurangabad continues to remain in the Y category.

“Nearly 18,000 employees associated with the state-run establishments from these areas will receive 30% HRA from their basic salary as against 20% granted earlier,” said Vinayak Lahade, vice-president of Maharashtra state gazetted officers association.

“The upward revision of HRA had taken place last in 2009. While the Centre has already reclassified and upgraded cities as per the latest Census, the state government took a lot of time to complete the process. Nevertheless, we are thankful that the state government took necessary steps,” he said.

As per government resolution issued on Friday, municipal limits of Nanded-Waghala and Sangli, including Sangli-Miraj Kupwada municipal council and Madhav Nagar, are areas that have found a place in Y category from the earlier Z category.

Nishikant Todkar, information officer associated with Nanded, said it was a practical decision taken by the government to include municipal limits of Nanded in Y category for grant of HRA. “It is a good move by the government that will benefit many employees,” he said.

“Devlali cantonment areas and limits of Bhagur municipal council in Nashik district have also been elevated to the Y category from the earlier Z. The municipal limits of Nashik was already under category Y,” the resolution noted. The government employees working in Y category city are eligible for HRA of upto 20% of basic salary.
