PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: Property tax defaulters in Pimpri Chinchwad have lapped up the chance to clear arrears using the demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes and are making payments as high as Rs 20 lakh.
A property holder paid Rs 15 lakh to clear his tax arrears at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Talawade divisional office on Friday using demonetized currency notes. About 10 tax defaulters cleared dues in the range of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. Civic officials told TOI that they did not have time to analyse who the property owners were or whether they were residential or commercial property owners as the staff is currently busy in just taking payments.
On Friday and Saturday, the property tax department mopped up as much as Rs 15.86 crore, most, or probably all, of which was paid using the scrapped currency notes. Speaking to media, joint commissioner and chief of property tax department Dilip Gawde said, “The highest one day collection till now was on Friday, Rs 12.45 crore. A total of 6,231 receipts for payments of Rs 12.45 crore were issued. These included cheque payment by 62 property holders amounting to Rs 57.22 lakh. Another 60 property holders paid the proper tax amounting to Rs 5.82 lakh using the online facility.”
