NOIDA: A special committee will soon be constituted to carry out a safety audit of all buildings in twin cities.
Rama Raman, chairperson of the three development authorities of Gautam Budh Nagar, told TOI on Saturday as the entire region lies in the very sensitive seismic zone 4, the special committee will inspect all buildings in the twin cities to determine whether they are earthquake resistant or not. “Old buildings need to be audited immediately. Owners of such buildings should participate in the audit,” he said.
Raman said the safety audit team will consist of experts from several fields. The team will include a soil expert, architect, earthquake consultant, chemical expert, fire official and building bye-laws official. They will inspect all new and old high rises of Noida and Greater Noida and issue a safety certificate after satisfying themselves that all building bye-laws have been followed.
To ensure that building construction and quake resistant norms are followed, sensitisation of architects will also be done. “This will fix responsibility as well as enable us to take strict action against violations of building code,” Raman said. “To address the vulnerability of structures in village areas, we have suggested implementation of building regulations. We will also invite retired defense personnel to associate with us and volunteer for disaster management.”
With an aim to reduce the impact of a disaster in totality, risk mapping will be done as per seismic zone 5 “even though we are located in seismic zone 4”, said Raman. “Vulnerable areas prone to high seismic activity will be identified by geological experts. These efforts will be undertaken to ensure quick response in case of a disaster,” he added.
Officials said the Noida Authority’s disaster management cell, along with other authorities, has already trained some 300 volunteers, who will step in to help in case of a disaster situation. Another 800 volunteers in the entire Gautam Budh Nagar district will also soon be trained.
