BENGALURU: Minister for Bengaluru development K J George on Tuesday said the government has decided to link five major satellite towns of Bengaluru for better access and development.

George said the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project worth Rs 11,000 crore will connect the satellite towns of Hoskote, Devanahalli, Ramanagaram, Kanakapura and Doddaballapur. “The road will connect Bengaluru from east to west and from north to south,” he said. The total length of the STRR will be around 380km George said the government will also speed up projects of the three signal-free corridors worth Rs 18,500 crore along with the 65-km Peripheral Ring Road which has been pending for a long time. The projects will be funded by JICA and the Centre.

The minister also proposed a Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) between K R Puram and the Central Silk Board.

“We’re also considering the proposal of constructing a Metro link between the two locations. While the BRTS is estimated to cost Rs 1,300 crore, the Metro will require Rs 3,000 crore,” he pointed out.

George dismissed talk of IT firms moving out of Whitefield by saying that companies moving out of Whitefield does not indicate they’re moving out of Bengaluru. “It only means they are expanding and are able to secure land and manpower at a cheaper rate elsewhere in the city,” he said.
