SURAT: The area-based development plan under the Smart City project envisages markets connected with skywalks.

After Surat being selected among the top 20 cities under smart city mission of central government, urban planners of Surat city unveiled the programme chalked out to have a visible impact of smart Surat in coming years.

Municipal commissioner Milind Torwane said Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has worked out a strategy to work in two ways. Under the area-based development plan, textile market area would be taken up first followed by retrofitting in four neighboring town planning schemes of Anjana and Parvat Patiya.

“We are looking at skywalk-connected markets to reduce congestion. More than 2 lakh people visit this small area on daily basis and such arrangements could reduce the load on ground,” he said.

In the pan city plan, mass transport and connectivity through IT-based solutions are a priority. “This will add to the mobility and connectivity of the people and public connectivity with the civic services. IT will improve the civic services,” said Jatin Shah, city engineer, SMC.

SMC has already allocated money for the smart Surat project apart and would now get a grant of Rs 100 crore from the centre and Rs 50 crore from the state government.

“We have made significant allocation in our coming budget but it will need much more to have visual impact of Smart Surat on ground,” said a senior SMC official.

SMC plans to spend about Rs 1,000 crore to boost basic infrastructural facilities along with citizen engagement programmes to take the city to a next level.
