The hotels were running without the board’s mandatory consent. The board had slapped closure notices on them a week ago.
The pollution board sought the help of police, Central Electricity Services Utility (Cesu) and Public Health and Engineering Organisation (PHEO) to seal the hotels.
OSPCB regional officer (Bhubaneswar) Hadibandhu Panigrahi said Hotel Arya Palace, Nirmal Inn and Pelican were sealed after they failed to conform to pollution control norms and obtain the mandatory consent to run the hotel. “We have disconnected power supply, water connection and asked them to stop restaurant services from the day of sealing,” said Panigrahi.
Since hotels generate liquid and solid waste, they come under the scanner of the pollution watch dog and they need to get prior permission from the board for various facilities.
Among the three hotels Arya Palace has more rooms and it has a restaurant too. Other two hotels have 30 rooms, he added.
Pollution board sources said four more hotels would be sealed on Saturday for similar violation. They are Bari International, Urmee, Annapurna and Highway Inn.
In August, the pollution board had listed 83 hotels in the city, which violated the norms and sent show cause notices. While 58 hotels applied for consent and responded to the board’s show cause notices, the remaining ones did not respond.
So far, of the 83 hotels in Bhubaneswar, 13 have valid consent to operate and establish.
The OSPCB’s closure drive has intensified ever since green campaigner Biranchi Narayan Mohapatra filed a petition in NGT stating that several hotels in state were functioning without obtaining the pollution board’s consent.
Two weeks ago, the pollution board slapped closure notice on Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC)-run Panthanivas and another private hotel. Another hotel is Grand Central located along Bhubaneswar-Puri Road near Old Railway Station.
Since October 2015, eleven hotels have been served closure notice for violating pollution control norms.
Panthanivas is tourism department’s facility to provide accommodation and food to tourists at reasonable prices. Panthanivas also provides travel services to the tourists.
