TN Slum Clearance Board to construct over 23K tenements and individual homes

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa has sanctioned construction of 23,476 tenements and individual houses by the Slum Clearance Board during the current fiscal.

An official statement said 7,204 tenements would be built in Chennai, Thanjavur, Trichy, Erode, Coimbatore, Pudukkottai, Namakkal and Nagapattinam.

As many as 16,272 individual houses will be built in cities and towns like Chennai, Vellore, Hosur, Ranipet, Vridhunagar and Madurai and in 157 town panchayats.

The individual housing scheme has been devised to benefit economically weaker sections and construction will take place on their own lands.

Each unit in the multi-storyed tenements will come up in an area of 400 square feet and have a multi-purpose room, bedroom, kitchen, balcony and bath and restroom.

The individual houses would have 300sqft, and the board would offer guidance for the construction, besides the government subsidy of Rs 2.10 lakh, the statement said.

In the last five years, the state government has built 59,023 multi-storeyed tenements and individual houses through the Slum Clearance Board. A total of 3,024 multi-storeyed tenements and 7,513 individual houses are being built now.
