The city has been selected as one of the cities to benefit from the Pradhan Mantri Aavas Yojana (PMAY). The housing demand for the city was assessed by the VMC as a part of the preparations for the PMAY and on the basis of surveys conducted earlier.
According to VMC officials, the city has a population of 17.94 lakh. In proportion to the population, the city should have around 4.5 lakh dwelling units. But according to the records of assessments of housing units for property tax, the city has only 3.54 lakh dwelling units at present.
The PMAY will also take care of the city’s ambitious plans to become a slum-free city. As many as 144 slums in the city that have not been provided housing so far will be taken care of under the scheme.
Officials said that the union government had set the target to ensure that every family in the country had a house by the year 2022 when the country celebrates the seventy-fifth year of its independence. The PMAY will remain operational from the year 2015-16 to 2021-22.
VMC will start a major exercise to assess the demand for housing against the estimated 96,000 needed. The civic body will be conducting the exercise to find out the actual number of persons needing housing against the present estimates. Gatherings will be held at the election and administrative wards to assess the actual demand of houses. Based on this a Housing for All Plan of Action will be drawn.
Under the PMAY families having income of up to Rs three lakh are eligible for housing under the economically weaker sections category while those with income up to Rs six lakh are eligible for housing for the lower-income group category.
Also, the beneficiaries should not own a house, anywhere in the country.
