Volunteers required to assist Govt. schools in Whitefield

With an aim to provide better education facilities to the students of government schools in Whitefield, two residents of the locality, Naveen Kumar and MP Harshavardhana, came up with an initiative to visit the government schools and provide them with volunteers and teaching aids.

Speaking to media about the initiative Harshavardhana, 43, said, “Basically we wanted to provide quality education to the children in government schools. The schools are short on teachers and we wanted to address that issue. We ensure that volunteers from nearby areas come to teach the children. In a government run primary school in Vijayanagara, the government had provided ceiling fans to the school but they did not provide them money to install it. The wirings in the rooms were in pathetic condition and could cause accidents as little children were around, so we helped fix them.”

The initiative was started two months back and several government schools in the vicinity have been provided with volunteers as a part of it.

Kumar, 29, said, “The schools have only two teachers and 65 students studying in classes ranging from first to fifth. Unable to teach individual standards, the teachers would club everyone together and teach. We have identified around 16 teaching volunteers who can teach in several schools in the area but we still need more volunteer teachers.”

The duo provided Cottolengo School for Mentally Challenged Children a UPS and Rs 15,000 to help the school buy a bus as the students were struggling to travel in public transport.

Nikhil Jagadeesh, a 26-year-old volunteer who has been teaching English in Vijayanagara Government Primary School shared, “I wanted to spend my weekends constructively so that it benefits others as well. The children were also happy that they were being taught from someone other than their teachers as well. I spend two hours every Saturday to teach them as it gives me satisfaction and I don’t lose anything by teaching the children.”

The list of schools where the volunteers have been involved in teaching:
Government Primary School, Kundalahalli Colony
Government Primary School, Vijayanagara
